Citizen Historian Updated! (September/October 2007)
Dear subscribers, friends and history enthusiasts
We have updated citizen historian for the month of September / October,
with a distinct Japanese flavour this time around…
==============================
Following up on his earlier contribution (Chasing A Dead Lead), Chew Yong
Jack provides a more detailed inside into structure and activities of the
Oka 9420 Unit in Singapore. Drawing on his research (which included the
online National Archives database – Accession) and a personal interview
with Othman Wok, Yong Jack wonders whether the activities Oka 9420 was
just limited to testing and research..

Fumihito Yamamoto is also back with a story about the significance of the
“Zero” in the famous Japanese WWII fighter plane, walking us through the
various calenders Japan had used before and during the war to mark time as
well as modernity.

In his first contribution to citizen historian, Fathie Abdat shares with
us his trials and tribulations in dealing with the field-research aspect
of history, by taking us to the libraries in and around Columbia
University. He also shares with us his changing perceptions of history as
he tackles the Masters programme day-by-day, source-by-source…

citizen historian is also launching and (attempting to) maintain an
inventory of post-grad history dissertations submitted to the Dept of
History in NUS as well as dissertations concerning Singapore history in
other universities around the world. The primary objective is to aid
research by history students and enthusiasts and also to show what has
been done (at least within NUS for now) so far.

The list is far from complete. Hence, we would like request your help in
adding to the postgraduate (MA and Ph.D.) list if you realise we have
missed out other history dissertations in NUS, in other crucial
institutions within Singapore (Nanyang University, NTU-NIE for example),
and dissertations on Singapore history from international universities.
=======================
We hope you enjoy reading the articles and also find the inventory of
history dissertations useful. Please feel free to post your comments or
email us any feedback concerning citizen historian.
Best wishes
The editors, citizen historian
