Researching History: List of Dissertations (Post-Graduate)

By Admin

Compiled by Hu Wen and Ho Chi Tim

The following list of dissertations (Ph.D. and Masters) is an overdue idea we finally got down to making it happen. There are various objectives in putting such a record together. One is to aid historical research in providing a useful inventory for the undergraduate and postgraduate history student fishing around for ideas or inspiration. Another is to showcase what is proving to be an expanding list of graduate work submitted by a diverse postgraduate community at the Department of History in NUS. A third objective is also to record dissertations concerning Singapore history from other universities. This way, we pay our dues to the historical discipline, the institutions in which we study and practice history, as well as the country citizen historian is based in.

This postgraduate list collects (1) all MA and Ph.D. (indicated before title) dissertations submitted to the Department of History (NUS), and (2) dissertations concerning Singapore history from other colleges and universities (indicated after title). The list is not exhaustive and is put together by using information made available online by the Department of History and the Library INtegrated Catalogue (LINC) of the NUS Libraries. The list is arranged by time period.

May I suggest that the list be organised according to themes/topics as well, esp. for the 2000s when there are many different topics covered. For example, the 2000s could be organized under the rubrics of Area Studies into Singapore/Malaysia, SEA, East Asia, South Asia, etc. Of course there will be limitations in every classificatory system, such as where do you put transnational studies, such as British Imperialism and Overseas Chinese. But at least, I think the list would become more useful, especially when more theses and dissertations (from overseas universities) are added. Also, should historical research be limited to those submitted to the History Department? What about historical research in other fields such as, Sociology, Anthropology, Art and Architecture History?

May I suggest that follow up action for this fine collecton of books be taken, by indicating whether some of these theses have been published. I see at least a few of the theses which have successfully been published. one of which include Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied’s “Raffles’s Discourses of Religions amongst the Malays” which have been published as “Raffles and Religion”. Thank you

I think hor, should not just include theses done by the Department of History. After include those liaoz, then it might be a good idea to scan the theses by other departments and take note of their theses which are of a historical nature/significance as well.
